Tillamook County Habitat for Humanity Honors Veterans and First Responders Through Neighbors Nourishing Neighbors for 9/11 Day

Posted on September 18, 2026 by Editor

Tillamook County Habitat for Humanity brought volunteers together in September for Neighbors Nourishing Neighbors for 9/11 Day, a community service project honoring local veterans and first responders as part of the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance.

With support from 9/11 Day and AmeriCorps, Habitat volunteers packed meals and delivered them throughout Tillamook County as a tangible way to remember September 11 through service and express gratitude to those who serve our community.

Volunteers from Tillamook PUD joined loyal Habitat volunteers, including Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Hill and Chuck Morrow, along with Habitat staff and other community members. Thanks to an incredibly efficient group of volunteers, meal packages were quickly assembled and prepared for distribution.

Meals, handwritten cards and information about our repair program were delivered to veterans and first responders throughout the community, including local fire stations, ambulance personnel, the U.S. Coast Guard, 9-1-1/dispatch, the Tillamook County Sheriff’s Department and the Tillamook City Police Department. Meals were also distributed to local veterans as a small expression of appreciation for their service.

“This event is just such a fun way for us to get to thank our veterans and first responders, which is something that is really near and dear to my heart,” said Briar Smith, Executive Director of Tillamook County Habitat for Humanity. “I appreciate the work they do for our community on a regular basis, and it is pretty special to have an opportunity to simply say thank you. We had a great group of volunteers, had a lot of fun together, and were able to turn that time into something meaningful for people throughout our community.”

The project reflects the spirit of the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, which encourages Americans to remember those lost and honor those who responded by coming together in service to others.

For Tillamook County Habitat for Humanity, the project also provided another opportunity to live out its mission to put God’s love into action by bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope. While Habitat is best known locally for affordable homeownership and Critical Home Repairs, building community and hope can take many forms, including bringing neighbors together to recognize and care for those who serve them.

Tillamook County Habitat for Humanity is grateful to 9/11 Day and AmeriCorps for making Neighbors Nourishing Neighbors for 9/11 Day possible, to Tillamook PUD and the community volunteers who gave their time, and especially to the veterans and first responders who serve Tillamook County every day.

Habitat hopes to continue Neighbors Nourishing Neighbors for 9/11 Day in future years as an annual opportunity for remembrance, service and gratitude.
