What began as a family’s worst nightmare on the evening of July 4th ended with an extraordinary rescue thanks to the coordinated efforts of first responders, volunteers, and members of the public.
The response began when Sgt. Chase Ross of the Tillamook County Sheriff’s Office received notification that a 4-year-old child had gone missing at Cape Lookout State Park. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Sgt. Ross immediately initiated a hasty search and notified partner agencies to begin a coordinated response. It is this type of decisive action and rapid coordination that helps turn potential tragedies into successful outcomes.
The child had become separated from her family on the beach near the water while visiting Cape Lookout State Park, prompting an immediate and extensive search involving local, state, and federal agencies. The search spanned challenging coastal terrain, dense vegetation, beaches, and offshore waters as responders worked tirelessly against time and the elements.
During the search, Oregon State Police Trooper Mayne contacted a camper at Cape Lookout State Park who had possibly seen the child. She provided the time she was last seen and direction of travel. This information proved vital in directing search efforts and ultimately contributed to saving the little girl’s life. The Tillamook County Sheriff’s Office extends its sincere appreciation to the camper who came forward and shared this information. Their willingness to speak with law enforcement made a significant difference in the outcome of this incident.
After hours of searching, the child was located approximately three miles from where she had gone missing. She was alert when she was found and was transported to Adventist Health Tillamook, where she was reported to be in good condition.
The Tillamook County Sheriff’s Office would like to recognize the exceptional teamwork demonstrated throughout this incident. The successful outcome was the direct result of seamless coordination between Oregon State Parks Rangers, Tillamook County Sheriff’s Office deputies, Tillamook County Search & Rescue volunteers, Netarts-Oceanside Fire District personnel and drone teams, Tillamook Ambulance, the U.S. Coast Guard, Tillamook 911, and numerous supporting partners. Their professionalism, determination, and commitment to serving our community were evident throughout the operation.
